What to buy for mould on clothes in the wardrobe

Four things for mould on clothes in the wardrobe: white vinegar and cloths to clean inside it, then hanging moisture absorbers and a humidity monitor. The fixes that matter most are free: put clothes away dry, pull the wardrobe off the wall and stop overfilling it. Repairs are not included.

Why this basket

  • Cleanipedia, Unilever's cleaning advice site, traces wardrobe mould to two causes, condensation and clothes put away damp, and the Centre for Sustainable Energy says the risk of mould starts when relative humidity goes above 60%. So the basket cleans off what has grown, then keeps the air inside the wardrobe drier.
  • Adur & Worthing Councils say not to overfill wardrobes, to keep a small gap between large furniture and the walls, and to put wardrobes against internal walls rather than external ones where you can. Cleanipedia suggests moving the wardrobe a few centimetres from the wall.
  • Clothes go back only when completely dry, as the Centre for Sustainable Energy advises, and Meaco adds that clothes should not touch the outside wall, to reduce mould growing on them.
  • In a rented home, mould that keeps coming back is often a repair. Shelter says landlords must fix problems that cause damp, such as leaks and poor ventilation, and that you can claim if damp and mould damage your belongings.

Today: rescue the clothes, clean the wardrobe

Deal with the mouldy clothes before anything goes back: Adur & Worthing Councils say to dry-clean mildewed clothes, and gov.uk suggests gloves, a mask and goggles while you remove mould.

White vinegar to clean inside the wardrobe

Miniml white cleaning vinegar, 5 L

4.5 on Amazon · 4,771 ratings · 5K+ bought last month · #3 in All-Purpose Cleaners · recorded 27 Sept 2026

Worth waitingon offer 11 of 31 days, not today

Cleanipedia's method for a mouldy wardrobe is a 50/50 mix of vinegar and water wiped over the surfaces, then undiluted vinegar left to dry, then a rinse with cold water and a towel dry. It warns that bleach can damage wood and finishes. This is 5 litres of cleaning vinegar, not for stone, marble or granite, the listing says.

Cleanipedia's steps need a cloth to wipe the vinegar on and another to dry the wood after the rinse, before the wardrobe is left open to air dry. This pack has twelve 30 x 30 cm cloths, the listing says, so each shelf can have a fresh one.

Hanging moisture absorbers for the rail

ANSIO hanging wardrobe dehumidifiers (12)

4.6 on Amazon · 6,744 ratings · 9K+ bought last month · #2 in Dehumidifiers · recorded 27 Sept 2026

A moisture absorber needs no power, so it can hang in a closed wardrobe. ANSIO says the first drops of water appear in 4 to 7 days and each bag lasts 4 to 6 weeks, depending on how damp the air is. It takes water out of the air but cannot fix a cold external wall or clothes put away damp, so the free steps come first.

A humidity monitor to check the room

AIMILAR humidity and temperature monitor

4.6 on Amazon · 1,955 ratings · 600+ bought last month · #7 in Hygrometers · recorded 27 Sept 2026

The Centre for Sustainable Energy says to keep relative humidity between 40 and 60%, with a risk of mould above 60%, and that a hygrometer shows what makes it go up or down. This monitor records the highest and lowest readings and can be recalibrated, the listing says, so a night inside the wardrobe shows its peak.

Can wait

  • A dehumidifier for the bedroom. If the room stays above 60%, the Centre for Sustainable Energy suggests a dehumidifier that removes at least 5 litres a day, set below 60%. The damp and condensation page covers them.
  • Mould spray for the wall behind the wardrobe. Adur & Worthing Councils say most fungicidal washes are made for hard surfaces such as tiles, not plastered, painted or papered walls, and the wrong one can add moisture. In a rented home, report the damp to your landlord first.

Skip it

  • Skip
    Bleach on a wooden wardrobe
Cleanipedia says bleach may not suit delicate wood or finishes, and can eat away at the protective gloss or discolour it.
  • Skip
A brush or vacuum to get the mould off
Adur & Worthing Councils say not to try to remove mould with a brush or a vacuum cleaner.
  • Skip
Plastic garment covers, like dry cleaners' bags
The Canadian Conservation Institute says not to use plastic garment bags for storing clothes, because there is no air circulation, which can let moisture build up.

Quick questions

Why are my clothes going mouldy in the wardrobe?

Damp air and damp clothes. Cleanipedia names condensation and clothing put away before it is dry. The Centre for Sustainable Energy says mould becomes a risk above 60% relative humidity and suggests not drying laundry indoors if you can avoid it. Adur & Worthing Councils add overfilled wardrobes, where air cannot circulate, and wardrobes against external walls.

How do I get mould out of clothes?

Dry-clean them, as Adur & Worthing Councils advise for mildewed clothes, and expect some marks to stay: the Canadian Conservation Institute warns that mould stains are difficult, if not impossible, to remove. Gov.uk suggests gloves, a mask and goggles while you deal with mould, and the Centre for Sustainable Energy says clothes should be completely dry before they go back in the wardrobe.

Do moisture absorbers work in a wardrobe?

They help in a closed space, within limits. ANSIO says its hanging bags start collecting water within 4 to 7 days and each lasts 4 to 6 weeks, depending on humidity. They do not fix the cause, so keep the wardrobe off the wall, leave space between clothes and put them away only when completely dry, as the Centre for Sustainable Energy advises.

Is mould in my wardrobe my landlord's problem?

Often, if damp in the building is the cause. Shelter says landlords must fix problems that cause damp, such as leaks, faulty installations and poor ventilation, and that you can claim if damp and mould damage your belongings. Gov.uk guidance for landlords calls it totally unreasonable to blame damp and mould on lifestyle choices. Report it in writing and keep a record.

How do I stop mould coming back in my wardrobe?

Give the clothes air. Adur & Worthing Councils say not to overfill wardrobes, to keep a small gap between furniture and walls and to pull shelves away from the back. Meaco says to make sure clothes are not touching the outside wall. Cleanipedia suggests moving the wardrobe a few centimetres out. Then check the humidity stays below 60%.
