Can I remove bathroom mould myself?
Yes, if it is a very small amount. Should I use bleach on bathroom mould?
No. Gov.uk says mould and mildew products should be used in preference to bleach, for health and safety reasons, and UniBond says bleach can damage silicone sealant. Follow the safety instructions on the product label, and let the surface dry completely afterwards.
Why does mould keep coming back on the sealant?
Usually because it has grown into the silicone. UniBond says that when mould has set too deeply into sealant, it needs to be removed and replaced rather than cleaned. Strip the old bead, wipe the joint with white spirit on a cloth, let it dry, then apply new anti-mould sealant.
Who fixes a broken extractor fan in a rented bathroom?
The landlord, if they installed it. Shelter lists extractor fans the landlord installed among the things a private landlord must fix. Gov.uk guidance asks landlords whether bathroom fans work and are powerful enough to remove moisture from showers and baths. Report it in writing and keep a copy.
Is black mould in the bathroom a health risk?
It can be. Gov.uk says damp and mould put children, older people and anyone with asthma or another lung condition most at risk. Cleaning the tiles removes the mould you can see; it is not a health measure. If you have symptoms, speak to a GP, and tell your landlord if the mould keeps coming back.
