What makes a good one

  • Half of them come off the Dogs Trust shopping list for a new dog: washable beds, spare food and water bowls, food puzzles and slow feeders, a fabric or double-ended training lead, and a collar and tag.
  • The tag comes first. The Control of Dogs Order 1992 says every dog "while in a highway or in a place of public resort shall wear a collar with the name and address of the owner inscribed on the collar or on a plate or badge attached to it". GOV.UK adds that a microchipped dog must still wear a collar and tag with your name and address in public.
  • Nothing to measure: coats and harnesses need the dog's measurements, which a giver rarely has, so they are left to the owner. Where a gift comes in sizes, the name says which one, so ask roughly how big the dog is first.

    A coat, harness or collar
Each has to fit. PDSA measures a coat at the length, chest and neck, and Dogs Trust wants room for one finger under a harness strap. A guessed size may not fit.
  • Skip
    Treats and food
Dogs Trust says to keep feeding what the dog is used to, to switch food gradually with the vet's advice, and to choose training treats for the dog's size and age. Leave both to the owner.
  • Skip
    A retractable lead
Dogs Trust recommends a flat, fixed-length clip lead and says flexi-leads give extra length when a dog pulls, which can confuse lead training.
