Who qualifies
- Students at a higher education institution in the UK or the Republic of Ireland, with an academic email address and proof of enrolment if Amazon asks. Without an academic email there is an alternative sign-up route.
- Or anyone aged 18 to 24, who uploads a driving licence or passport to prove their age.
- One academic email address can be used for one membership only.
When to start: six months from the day you join
A trial started on 26 September runs to about 26 March 2027. That covers Prime Big Deal Days on 6 and 7 October and Black Friday on 27 November, so there is no reason to hold off for either.
During the trial you get Prime delivery, Prime Video and Amazon Music Prime. You do not get sharing through Amazon Family or the Kindle Owners' Lending Library, and a Twitch channel subscription covers one month only.
What it costs after the trial
£4.49 a month or £47.49 a year, which Amazon describes as half the regular Prime price. Twelve monthly payments come to £53.88, so the yearly plan is £6.39 cheaper over a full year.
The discount lasts while you are a student, for up to four years, or until you turn 25 if you joined on age, and six years is the most anyone gets. After that the membership renews as regular Prime, currently £8.99 a month or £95 a year. Amazon emails you before it switches.
How to cancel, and the one-trial rule
Cancel from Your Amazon Prime Membership: select Manage, then Update, Cancel and More. Cancel during the six-month trial and come back later, and you get no second trial, only the paid student rate. Student memberships cannot be paused.
Already paying for Prime? Switching to the student plan refunds the remaining months of your current membership.
What the student plan does not include
Kindle Unlimited and Audible are separate subscriptions with their own fees. Kindle Unlimited is £9.49 a month after a 30-day trial, and Audible Standard is £5.99 a month after 30 days.
