Who each one suits
Both work on a Kindle, a Fire tablet or the free Kindle app for iOS and Android. Kindle Unlimited also works in the Kindle app on Mac and PC and in a web browser.
- Prime Reading: you already have Prime, read a book or two a month, and are happy to choose from whatever is on the shelf that month.
- Kindle Unlimited: you read several books a month, work through series, or want audiobooks and magazines in the same subscription.
The maths
Kindle Unlimited costs £9.49 a month after the trial, which is £113.88 over a year. A year of Prime costs £95 and brings Prime Reading along with delivery and Prime Video. The fair test for Kindle Unlimited is how much you would otherwise spend on Kindle books in a month you use it.
Borrowing limits: Prime Reading 10 titles at a time; Kindle Unlimited 20, with no due dates. Since 22 April 2026, each magazine issue borrowed through Kindle Unlimited counts toward those 20.
When to start the Kindle Unlimited trial
Start it when you have reading time ahead: a holiday, a run of long journeys, the weeks after Christmas. The 30 days are for new subscribers who have not tried Kindle Unlimited before, so a busy month wastes them.
At the end of the trial it becomes a paid monthly plan automatically.
How to cancel
Go to Manage your Kindle Unlimited Membership and select Cancel membership. You keep access until the next billing date; after that, borrowed titles are removed from your devices.
The 14-day refund right applies only if you paid when you joined, not after a free trial. Monthly members can pause for one month instead of cancelling, but not during a trial or promotional period.
Prime Reading needs no cancelling. To return a title, open Manage Your Content and Devices, filter by Prime Reading and select Return this title.
Sharing
Kindle Unlimited members can share Kindle Unlimited titles with their Amazon Family members, and a Prime member can share Prime Reading with one other adult at the same address.
