Dogs Trust says a crate should let a puppy stand up, turn around, lie down, sit, wag their tail and stretch out fully. A playpen needs a comfortable resting space where the puppy can stretch out, with their water, food and toys, and room to move around.
Battersea suggests putting the dog's bedding inside the crate and covering it with a thick blanket on every side but the door. Keep the crate out of direct sunlight and, the RSPCA adds, out of draughts.
Introducing either one
The RSPCA suggests placing the crate where the family spends a lot of time, with the door fixed open at first. Battersea then advises closing the door gently without locking it, repeated for several days, before locking it for short and gradually longer spells.
Dogs Trust and the RSPCA both say never to use a crate as punishment. Dogs Trust adds that a puppy should not be left alone for longer than it can cope with, and to ask your vet how long is right.

Dogs Trust says you may be able to fix a pen either side of the crate opening, so the crate becomes part of the playpen area. Battersea notes that, if you have room, a larger puppy-proofed space can stand in for a crate.
