How long should a new tank run before adding fish?

What size tank should a beginner buy?
Bigger than 45 x 30 x 30 cm, or about 40 litres, the RSPCA says, and as big as you can reasonably fit, because larger volumes keep temperature and water quality more stable. The RSPCA's own example, 60cm wide, 30cm tall and 30cm deep, holds 54 litres.
Do I need a heater for a fish tank?
For tropical fish, yes. The RSPCA says tropical fish need a tank heater, controlled by a thermostat and set for the species you keep. Goldfish need 10 to 21°C, so a heater is not normally necessary for them.
How often should I change the water?
Every week. OATA suggests partial changes of up to 25%, and the RSPCA suggests 30%. Treat the new water with dechlorinator, match its temperature to the tank, and never rinse the filter sponge under the tap: swish it in the old tank water instead.
Which fish suit a first tropical tank?
OATA lists tetras, guppies, mollies, platies, swordtails, corydoras and gouramis as good beginner tropical species. Ask an OATA retailer how many your tank can hold and which will live together, and add them slowly once the tank has cycled.
